Affordable Care Act
Deadline to enroll for 2014 coverage is March 31
According to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) could provide health insurance to previously 422,000 uninsured nonelderly New Mexicans. With the introduction of Medicaid expansion and Exchange or Marketplace private health care coverage, the new provision is expected to cover about 71 percent of these previously uninsured nonelderly adults by 2019 (New Mexico Voices of Children, 2012). The new provision also includes a fine to those who choose to be uninsured, although there are exemptions.
Still Work to be Done: New Mexico enrollment in ACA has been categorized in the worst-performing category (ACASignups.Net, 2014). NMHIX had to revise its health insurance enrollment from reaching 80,000 by March 31 to 50,000 due to unpromising trends.
